Introduction
Many
important class computer applications
such as computational fluid dynamic
simulation, molecular dynamics simulation,
bioinformatics application and business
applications such as massive web and
e-commerce services, large-scale databases
and data mining usually demand a very
high computing power. Recently, one
technology that is used to build a high
performance computing system is cluster
computing. This technology is the methods
of building large, scalable computing
system from commodity off-the-shelf
PC system linked together using high-speed
network. This technology has a high
potential to be applied successfully
in Thailand since it offers many benefit
scalability and high performance at
a very economical cost.
Kasetsart
University has conducted an extensive
research in cluster computing since
1996. The goal is to make Thailand sustainable
in the area of High Performance computing
by allowing Thai researcher to integrate
a high performance computing system
from PC equipment available in the country.
Current research focus on
Configuration of a Cluster System
The
development of a fully integrated
cluster environment called SCE (Scalable
Clusters Environment) which consists
of
- -
Automatics cluster infrastructure
builder (Beowulf Builder) - Powerful
middleware ( KSIX)
- -
Flexible batch scheduling system
(SQMS)
- -
Autonomous and self- healing technology
(AMATA)
- -
Advanced system management tools
(SCMS)
- -
Advanced system instrumentation
- Grid
computing and Multicluster systems
- The
development of high performance
parallel application in the area
of Computational Fluid Dynamics
SCE structure and main software
components
Research
Results
- The
building of PIRUN cluster, largest
computing system in Thailand.
- The
building of AMATA , very advanced
cluster system. AMATA appears among
a few success case of AMD Inc. Worldwide
- National
Invention Awards from Thailand Prime
Minister ( Appreciation Award) in
2000.
- More
than 45 refereed publications in
cluster computing research area
- SCE
(Scalable clusters Environment)
software that are being distributed
worldwide and being used by many
commercial company such as COMPAQ
, PSSClab as a part of their solutions
. SCE consists of more than 300000
lines of code.
- Partnership
with AMD, COMPAQ, UTK, SDSC, MCS/Argonne
