E-KU Team, a mechanical engineering undergraduate student team from the Faculty of Engineering, Kasetsart University (KU) has won the first runner up award of the Undergraduate Level Contest from the Third Honda Econo Power Contest, 2000 with a fuel consumption record of 396 km/liter.

Practically, the Honda Econo Power Contest has set up annually by the A.P. Honda Company. Typically, the contest aims to contest fuel economy and efficiency of the vehicle with three levels of competition, namely, undergraduate, vocational and general public levels, respectively. The objectives of the contest are to promote an automotive engineering skill and energy saving considerations of the undergraduate, vocational, and public level competitors, and to promote the student or competitor activity to work in a team.
Mr. Wacharin Poolklai, Miss Aroonporn Thipwimolmas, Miss Suvitta Chitcharoen, Mr. Sarvat Aksaralikitsanti, and Mr. Terdthai Tientong as the members of the E-KU Team under the advisory of Assistant Professor Mayuree Thespol, the Head Department of Mechanical Engineering has designed and fabricated an economical power car to join the Third Honda Econo Power Contest. Mr. Wacharin Plueklie, the team leader has reported that the E-KU Team was modified from the vehicle which has won the Second Honda Econo Power Contest last year. The modifications were done mainly to modify the engine to be more efficient, and to the vehicle body to be more aerodynamically steamlined and to minimize the weight of the vehicle. Based on the records, it was found that fuel consumption has been increased from 246 to 396 km/liter.
Based on the outcome and attitude of the students, it is quite obvious that this contest has played an important role to promote the student activities and practices in addition to theories which have been studied in the classes. Accordingly, The Faculty of Engineering, KU has realized the merrit of this type of contest and has committed an annual budget for this particular contest.
